Let your hearts reflect the glories of the Sun of Truth in
their many colors to gladden the eye of the divine Cultivator Who has nourished
them. Day by day become more closely attracted in order that the love of God
may illumine all those with whom you come in contact. Be as one spirit, one
soul, leaves of one tree, flowers of one garden, waves of one ocean.

Any abasement is bearable except betraying one's own
country, and any sin is forgivable other than dishonouring the government and
inflicting harm upon the nation.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (From a Tablet; quoted in an
open letter from the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Iran about the
Banning of the Baha'i Administration; included in Messages from the Universal
House of Justice 1963-1986’)
January 29
Be like a well-cultivated garden wherein the roses and
variegated flowers of heaven are growing in fragrance and beauty. It is my hope
that your hearts may become as ready ground, carefully tilled and prepared,
upon which the divine showers of the bounties of the Blessed Perfection may
descend and the zephyrs of this divine springtime may blow with quickening
breath. Then will the garden of your hearts bring forth its flowers of
delightful fragrance to refresh the nostril of the heavenly Gardener.

You have asked whether a husband would be able to prevent
his wife from embracing the divine light or a wife dissuade her husband from
gaining entry into the Kingdom of God. In truth neither of them could prevent
the other from entering into the Kingdom, unless the husband hath an excessive
attachment to the wife or the wife to the husband. Indeed when either of the
two worshippeth the other to the exclusion of God, then each could prevent the
other from seeking admittance into His Kingdom.

As difference in degree of capacity exists among human
souls, as difference in capability is found, therefore, individualities will
differ one from another. But in reality this is a reason for unity and not for
discord and enmity. If the flowers of a garden were all of one color, the
effect would be monotonous to the eye; but if the colors are variegated, it is most
pleasing and wonderful. The difference in adornment of color and capacity of
reflection among the flowers gives the garden its beauty and charm. Therefore,
although we are of different individualities, different in ideas and of various
fragrances, let us strive like flowers of the same divine garden to live
together in harmony. Even though each soul has its own individual perfume and
color, all are reflecting the same light, all contributing fragrance to the
same breeze which blows through the garden, all continuing to grow in complete
harmony and accord. Become as waves of one sea, trees of one forest, growing in
the utmost love, agreement and unity.

January 26
The bounties of the Blessed Perfection are infinite. We must
endeavor to increase our capacity daily, to strengthen and enlarge our
capabilities for receiving them, to become as perfect mirrors. The more
polished and clean the mirror, the more effulgent is its reflection of the
lights of the Sun of Truth.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (From a talk, 17 April 1912, New

The melody of the Kingdom is that which hath caused the
motion of the universe; the musk-diffusing fragrance of the rose-garden of God
is that which hath perfumed the nostrils; and the reflection of the Sun of
Truth is that which hath illumined the whole earth. Now is the beginning of
illumination! Therefore, the people of darkness imagine that they can oppose
(this Revelation); yet, ere long they shall find themselves in loss and
consternation! They shall observe that the power of the Word of God hath
subdued East and West. Be thou not sad and dispirited on account of the
opposition of the heedless ones. Soon they shall regret sorely. Reflect thou
how the Pharisees persecuted and looked down in contempt upon His Holiness the
Christ. The result was that His lamp became ignited, His light began to shine
and His followers sparkled like unto the stars from the horizon of existence;
and the consequence to the Pharisees was the pangs of remorse and regrets.

Verily, the weakness of body and its strength do neither
harm nor benefit; nay, rather the spirit must be strong through the breath of
the Holy Spirit, at this time, so that it may apprehend the consummate wisdom
which is deposited in this great age. I beg of God that He may increase joy and
fragrance in thy spirit, give thee power and strength, and that He may help
thee at every moment in faith and assurance. Verily my Lord is powerful in all
things! Trust thou in the grace of thy Master and ask that which thou wishest
from His Name, the Clement, the Merciful.

‘Abdu’l-Baha, vol. 1)

The end of every (material) work is without result, because
it is perishable and inconstant, but the first (real) work is attraction to the
fragrance of God, enkindlement with the fire of the love of God, reading the
verses of Unity and beholding the lights from the Dawning-place of
Mystery. After that cometh the training
of the soul, purification of character and service to humanity. If thou art
able to accomplish any one of these, the result is eternal and the fruit
everlasting.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Tablets of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, vol. 1)
January 21
Thou hast written that thou lovest the Bible. Undoubtedly,
the friends and the maid-servants of the Merciful should know the value of the
Bible, for they are the ones who have discovered its real significances and
have become cognizant of the hidden mystery of the Holy Book…

Music is one of the important arts. It has a great effect
upon the human spirit. Musical melodies are a certain something which prove to
be accidental upon etheric vibrations, for voice is nothing but the expression
of vibrations, which, reaching the tympanum, affect the nerves of hearing.
Musical melodies are, therefore, those peculiar effects produced by, or from,
vibration. However, they have the keenest effect upon the spirit. In sooth,
although music is a material affair, yet its tremendous effect is spiritual,
and its greatest attachment is to the realm of the spirit.

From the beginning of the world until the present time each
‘Manifestation’ sent from God has been opposed by an embodiment of the ‘Powers
of Darkness’. This dark power has always endeavoured to extinguish the light.
Tyranny has ever sought to overcome justice. Ignorance has persistently tried
to trample knowledge underfoot. This has, from the earliest ages, been the
method of the material world. In the time of Moses, Pharaoh set himself to
prevent the Mosaic Light being spread abroad. In the day of Christ, Annas and
Caiaphas inflamed the Jewish people against Him and the learned doctors of
Israel joined together to resist His Power. All sorts of calumnies were
circulated against Him. The Scribes and Pharisees conspired to make the people
believe Him to be a liar, an apostate, and a blasphemer. They spread these
slanders throughout the whole Eastern world against Christ, and caused Him to
be condemned to a shameful death! In the case of Muhammad also, the learned
doctors of His day determined to extinguish the light of His influence. They
tried by the power of the sword to prevent the spread of His teaching.
In spite of all their efforts the Sun of Truth shone forth
from the horizon. In every case the army of light vanquished the powers of
darkness on the battlefield of the world, and the radiance of the Divine
Teaching illumined the earth. Those who accepted the Teaching and worked for
the Cause of God became luminous stars in the sky of humanity.

Question: What is meant by “mysteries” in the blessed
Tablets?
Answer: By “mysteries” is meant such matters and questions
as are remote and hidden from the minds and understandings of the people, but
which can later be grasped by fair-minded souls if a perfect Individual
unravels and explains them. Thus, the reality of the advent of Christ was one
of God’s mysteries in the Mosaic Dispensation, which was later disclosed and
witnessed through the manifestation of Christ.

The world has become a new world. The darkness of night
which has enveloped humanity is passing. A new day has dawned. Divine
susceptibilities and heavenly capacities are developing in human souls under
the training of the Sun of Truth. The capacities of souls are different. Their
conditions are various. For example, certain minerals come from the stony
regions of the earth. All are minerals, all are produced by the same sun, but
one remains a stone while another develops the capacity of a glittering gem or
jewel. From one plot of land tulips and hyacinths grow; from another, thorns and
thistles. Each plot receives the bounty of the sunshine, but the capacity to
receive it is not the same. Therefore, it is requisite that we must develop
capacity and divine susceptibility in order that the merciful bounty of the Sun
of Truth intended for this age and time in which we are living may reflect from
us as light from pure crystals.

If a soul opens the eye of equity, he will become amazed and
surprised and will testify justly that all the nations and peoples of the world
should be grateful and thankful to the teachings of Baha’u’llah. For these
teachings make tame every ferocious animal, give speed to those that only move,
transform human souls into angels of heaven and make the world of humanity the
center of the manifestation of mercy.

O ye loving friends! Strive ye with heart and soul to make
this world the mirror-image of the Kingdom, that this nether world may teem
with the blessings of the world of God, that the voices of the Company on high
may be raised in acclamation, and signs and tokens of the bounties and
bestowals of Bahá’u’lláh may encompass all the earth.

…the friends are stars in the high heavens of guidance,
celestial bodies in the skies of divine grace, who with all their powers put
the dark to flight. They break down the foundations of malevolence and hate.
They cherish but one desire for the world and all its peoples: well-being and
peace. By them, the ramparts of warfare and aggression are battered down. They
have truthfulness and honest dealing and friendship for their goal, and
kindness even toward a vicious foe; until at last they change this prison of
treachery, the world, into a mansion of utmost trust, and turn this gaol-house
of hatred and malevolence and spite, into God’s Paradise.

He who hath knowledge and power will rather seek out the
glory of heaven, and spiritual distinction, and the life that dieth not. And
such a one longeth to approach the sacred Threshold of God; for in the tavern
of this swiftly-passing world the man of God will not lie drunken, nor will he
even for a moment take his ease, nor stain himself with any fondness for this
earthly life.

There are two influences tending toward prosperity and progress
which emanate from the forefront of advancement of the world of humanity…. One
is the influence of civilization - that development of the world of nature that
concerns the material life of man. It promotes physical advancement and
cultivates the social virtues…. The other is the divine influence, the holy and spiritual
revelations, which insure eternal glory, everlasting happiness, the
illumination of the world, the appearance of merciful phenomena in the world of
humanity, and perpetual life.

…difference and variety is inherent and innate in the parts
and members of man, which afford the means for revealing perfections, and since
these members and parts (of the human organism) are under the control of the
king of the spirit, the spirit interpenetrates the parts and governs even the
veins and arteries. This difference and variety then is no barrier to oneness
and love governed by the spirit. This diversity is indeed the greatest power of
unity.

…the attraction and affinity of things are the cause of
fructification and production, and estrangement and disunion among things the
cause of death and annihilation. By attraction and affinity all living beings
such as plants, animals and men are realized. From disagreement and
estrangement dissemination results and annihilation follows. Verily the life of
the human world is that which is conducive to unity, attraction and concord of
mankind.

passion.

The almighty God has not created in man the claws and teeth
of the lion; nay the human existence is made and fashioned after the best form
and for the most consummate innate virtues. Therefore it behooves man in homage
for this creation and gratitude for this bestowal that he should exercise
friendship and love for his kind, nay more, he should treat all living beings
with justice and equity.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (From a Tablet; Star of the West, vol.

…in the general world, when mankind accomplished physical
development, traveled through the grades of civilization and attained the human
wonders, virtues and endowments in their most consummate form, it attained
capacity for the appearance and extension of the spiritual divine perfections
and obtained worthiness for hearing the divine summons.
Then the ensign of the Kingdom was raised, spiritual virtues and perfections became manifest, the sun of reality arose, the light of the "Most Great Peace" dawned, the solidarity of the human world was realized. We hope that the radiation of these lights may, day by day, become intensified and these ideal virtues magnified. Thus may the great achievement of the human world become evident and manifest, and the beloved of the love of God may become with the utmost sweetness and beauty the representatives of the (heavenly) assemblage.

Praise be to God! For centuries and cycles the banner of
civilization has been raised, the human world has day by day advanced and
developed, the material world has flourished and outward perfections increased
until now the world of human existence has attained great capacity for the
spiritual teachings and the divine summons.

These holy dawning places [Manifestations of God] are
the Educators of the world of existence and the Teachers of man. They deliver
human beings from the darkness of error and heedlessness and the defects and
vices of nature and lead them to the realm of spiritual virtues and heavenly
perfections. Those who are ignorant become wise, those who are like animals
attain human perfections, the rapacious become angelic, the tyrannical and
proud become just and humble, so that earthly man becomes heavenly, the human
is changed into the divine, the suckling child attains its maturity and the
poor and abased attain wealth and glory.

The holy divine Manifestations have appeared to make it easy
to replace the gloom of animality with the lights of heavenly qualities and to
change the imperfections of the world of nature to the perfections of the
spirit so that the heavenly aspect may prevail, the image and likeness of God
may appear in the world of man and the divine illumination and spiritual
virtues may become manifest.

‘Abdu’l-Baha is the standard of the divine love, the sign of
the gift of God, the servant of the assemblage of the merciful ones, the light
of the meeting of the spiritual ones. He is the orb of peace and reconciliation
and the light of love in the world of humanity. He is the herald of the Kingdom
of the Merciful One and the promulgator of the religion of rectitude and
security. This is the station of this servant! This is the Truth!
