…the address of the angels to the people of Galilee, “That
this Christ will return in the same way and that He will descend from heaven,”
is a spiritual address. For when Christ appeared, He came from heaven, although
He was outwardly born from the womb of Mary. For He said: “No man hath ascended
up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven.” He said: “I came down from
heaven and likewise will go to heaven.” By “heaven” is not meant this infinite
phenomenal space, but “heaven” signifies the world of the divine kingdom which
is the supreme station and seat of the Sun of Truth.

As to the resurrection of the body of Christ three days
subsequent to His departure: This signified the divine teachings and spiritual
religion of His Holiness Christ, which constitute His spiritual body, which is
living and perpetual forevermore.
By the “three days” of His death is meant that after the
great martyrdom, the penetration of the divine teachings and the spread of the
spiritual law became relaxed on account of the crucifixion of Christ. For the
disciples were somewhat troubled by the violence of divine tests. But when they
became firm, that divine spirit resurrected and that body—which signifies the
divine word—arose.

July 29
Thou hast asked concerning the station of this servant. The
station of this servant is servitude to the Holy Threshold (Baha’u’llah) and I
glory and honor in this. ‘Abdu’l-Baha is the standard of the divine love, the
sign of the gift of God, the servant of the assemblage of the merciful ones,
the light of the meeting of the spiritual ones. He is the orb of peace and
reconciliation and the light of love in the world of humanity. He is the herald
of the Kingdom of the Merciful One and the promulgator of the religion of
rectitude and security. This is the station of this servant! This is the Truth!
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (‘Tablets of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, vol. 1')
July 28
Know thou, verily, Baha’ was the Sun of Love and Peace, who
shone forth with the Light of Guidance and was a Spirit of Life to all regions.
The signs of His effulgence shall appear when the love of God shall influence
the hearts, just as the soul influenceth bodies. The clouds of darkness shall
be dispelled from the manifest light of love and peace, and from the abundant
bounty of reconciliation and tranquility.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha ('Tablets of
‘Abdu’l-Baha, vol. 1')
July 27
Do not look at thy weakness and impotence; nay, look at the
power of thy Lord, which hath surrounded all regions. The sea of forgiveness
hath moved and the waves of pardon and beneficence have submerged the people of
sin. Be isolated from the grades of self and desire, so that thou mayest
succeed in that which behooveth the service of the Kingdom of God, and that
thou mayest be healed from every disease and sickness.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha ('Tablets
of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, vol. 1')
July 26
Thou must live in such a spiritual condition that thy very
presence in the meetings may transform the audiences into the congregations of
the elect and set aglow in their hearts the fire of the Love of God. Exalt thy
ambition! Universalize thy ideals! Spread thy wings of compassion over all the
regions of the globe.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Words of ‘Abdu’l-Baha addressed to a
travel teacher; Star of the West, vol. 5, no. 1, March 21, 1914)

The Jews were expecting the appearance of the Messiah,
looking forward to it with heart and soul. But because they were submerged in
imitation, they did not believe in His Holiness Jesus Christ when He appeared,
and finally arose against Him, even to the point of persecution. Had they
investigated Reality, they would have accepted their promised Messiah. These
blind imitations fill the world with darkness, cause warfare and become the
cause of rancor and hatred. Therefore, we must investigate Realty in order to
extricate ourselves from all these conditions. Thus may our faces become
illumined and may we find the pathway to the Kingdom of God.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (From a talk, June 9, 1912, Baptist Temple, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA;
Star of the West, vol. 5, no. 7, July 13, 1914)
July 24
I am waiting, waiting to hear the glad news that the
believers are the embodiment of sincerity and loyally, that they are the incarnation
of love and amity and the visible symbols of unity and concord! Will they not
rejoice my heart? Will they not satisfy my cravings? Will they not comply with
my request? Will they not fulfill my anticipations? Will they not answer my
call? I am waiting. I am patiently waiting! ‘Abdu’l-Bha

Now in the world of being, the Hand of Divine Power hath
firmly laid the foundations of the all-highest bounty and this wondrous gift.
Whatsoever is latent in the innermost of this Holy Cycle shall gradually appear
and be made manifest, for now is but the beginning of its growth and the
day-spring of the revelation of its signs. Ere the close of this century and of
this age it shall be made clear and evident how wondrous was that springtide
and how heavenly was that gift!
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Quoted by Shoghi Effendi in a
letter dated 8 January 1923; Star of the West, vol. 14, no. 2, May 1923; Baha’i
News, no. 72, April 1933)
July 22
The inscrutable divine wisdom underlieth such heart-rending
occurrences. [death of a youth] It is as if a kind gardener transferreth a
fresh and tender shrub from a confined place to a wide open area. This transfer
is not the cause of the withering, the lessening or the destruction of that
shrub; nay, on the contrary, it maketh it to grow and thrive, acquire freshness
and delicacy, become green and bear fruit. This hidden secret is well known to
the gardener, but those souls who are unaware of this bounty suppose that the
gardener, in his anger and wrath, hath uprooted the shrub. Yet to those who are
aware, this concealed fact is manifest, and this predestined decree is
considered a bounty. Do not feel grieved or disconsolate, therefore, at the
ascension of that bird of faithfulness; nay, under all circumstances pray for
that youth, supplicating for him forgiveness and the elevation of his station.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (‘Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’)
July 21
O ye two patient souls! Your letter was received. The death
of that beloved youth and his separation from you have caused the utmost sorrow
and grief; for he winged his flight in the flower of his age and the bloom of
his youth to the heavenly nest. But he hath been freed from this
sorrow-stricken shelter and hath turned his face toward the everlasting nest of
the Kingdom, and, being delivered from a dark and narrow world, hath hastened
to the sanctified realm of light; therein lieth the consolation of our hearts.

O thou lady of the Kingdom! Praise thou God that in this
age, the age of the dispensation of Bahá’u’lláh, thou hast been awakened, hast
been made aware of the Manifestation of the Lord of Hosts. All the people of
the world are buried in the graves of nature, or are slumbering, heedless and
unaware. Just as Christ saith: ‘I may come when you are not aware. The coming
of the Son of Man is like the coming of a thief into a house, the owner of
which is utterly unaware.’
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (‘Selections from the Writings of
‘Abdu’l-Baha’)
July 18
Thou hadst asked about fate, predestination and will. Fate
and predestination consist in the necessary and indispensable relationships
which exist in the realities of things. These relationships have been placed in
the realities of existent beings through the power of creation and every
incident is a consequence of the necessary relationship. For example, God hath
created a relation between the sun and the terrestrial globe that the rays of
the sun should shine and the soil should yield. These relationships constitute
predestination, and the manifestation thereof in the plane of existence is
fate. Will is that active force which controlleth these relationships and these
incidents. Such is the epitome of the explanation of fate and predestination. I
have no time for a detailed explanation. Ponder over this; the reality of fate,
predestination and will shall be made manifest.

the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’)

In these days the banner of political dissension and
revolution is raised throughout Persia. Every part is afflicted with
disturbance and each district is in the grasp of turmoil. All the people are in
the utmost confusion. But, praise be to God, the friends of God did not mix
with any of the political affairs, neither did they interfere with the plans of
either party. They were the friends of all parties and kind to every one,
inviting all to unity and concord, which is the fundamental basis of progress
and civilization. They did not utter a word, neither did they offend any one;
they made no complaint against any one; but they praised and glorified the
unity and concord of the world of humanity. Therefore they were protected and
preserved. Whosoever acted otherwise became afflicted with great calamity.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (From a Tablet to the Spiritual Assembly of Mashad, Persia,
during the year 1910; Baha’i News, no. 66, September 1932)

I have stayed a long time with you in New York. My stay in
other towns has not been a tenth as long. I have met with you day and night,
individually and collectively; conveyed to you the admonitions of Bahá'u'lláh;
delivered to you the heavenly glad tidings; and explained the means of human
progress. I have elucidated the harmful effects of prejudices and imitations
and the impurity of selfish desires, expounded the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh and
clarified the meanings of the divine proofs and questions.
The time for my departure is near and I am making
arrangements for the voyage. Therefore I shall not be able to attend every
meeting, so I shall bid you farewell. I am pleased with you and grateful for
your services. Truly, you have shown great kindness and extended to me the
utmost hospitality.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Words of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, December 2, New York,
recorded by Mahmud Zarqani; ‘Mahmud’s Diary’)
July 15
His [Baha’u’llah’s] father was a court minister, not a
divine, and it is well known throughout Persia that He never studied in a
school or associated with the learned and the divines. He passed the early part
of His life in the utmost comfort and happiness, and His companions and
associates were Persians of rank rather than learned men.

Disease is of two kinds: material and spiritual. Take for
instance, a cut hand; if you pray for the cut to be healed and do not stop its
bleeding, you will not do much good; a material remedy is needed. Sometimes if
the nervous system is paralyzed through fear, a spiritual remedy is necessary.
Madness, incurable otherwise, can be cured through prayer. It often happens
that sorrow makes one ill, this can be cured by spiritual means.

O servant of Bahá! Be self-sacrificing in the path of God,
and wing thy flight unto the heavens of the love of the Abhá Beauty, for any
movement animated by love moveth from the periphery to the centre, from space
to the Day-Star of the universe. Perchance thou deemest this to be difficult,
but I tell thee that such cannot be the case, for when the motivating and
guiding power is the divine force of magnetism it is possible, by its aid, to
traverse time and space easily and swiftly. Glory be upon the people of Bahá.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (‘Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’)

Someone asked if the Humanitarian Society was good.
‘Abdu’l-Baha: Yes all societies, all organizations, working
for the betterment of the human race are good, very good. All who work for
their brothers and sisters have Bahá’u’lláh’s blessing. They will surely
succeed.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Notes of conversations; ‘Abdu’l-Baha in London’)

O thou assured soul, thou maidservant of God...! Be not
grieved at the death of thy respected husband. He hath, verily, attained the
meeting of his Lord at the seat of Truth in the presence of the potent King. Do
not suppose that thou hast lost him. The veil shall be lifted and thou shalt
behold his face illumined in the Supreme Concourse. Just as God, the Exalted,
hath said, ‘Him will we surely quicken to a happy life.’ Supreme importance
should be attached, therefore, not to this first creation but rather to the
future life.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (‘Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’)
July 10
O ye friends of Abdu’l-Baha! In these days, through the
happy circumstances and the confirmation of the Lord of the Supreme Heavens and
the assistance of the Unseen Kingdom, the holy remains of His highness the
Supreme (Báb) were transferred to the Mount of Carmel in Haifa in the present
Tomb. Therefore, it is necessary for the believers to celebrate the occasion
with joy and happiness. The believers in Tabriz became exhilarated with this
cup and with the polo of magnanimity carried away the ball of service from the
arena of the Cause. Perhaps later on the people of hatred and enmity, may
calumniate and misrepresent the facts, stating that the blessed remains of the
Bab are in some other place, or that a part of it is elsewhere. The friends of
God must know that this is a pure falsehood, calumny and malicious slander.
That blessed, crucified body is interred in its entirety on Mount Carmel, but
the enemies will not rest quiet. It is certain that they will raise a clamor
and claim that we stole that blessed body, or fraudulently transferred it or
got hold of a part of it, or that the genii took it away from the firm ones.
All these statements are fabrications and slanders. The whole truth is
explained here.

3, April 28, 1910)

His Exalted Majesty (the Báb) from the beginning of the
arising of His Beauty to the day of the Greatest Martyrdom, spent days and
nights under severest trials, in the Path of God; He made His breast a target
for thousands of arrows of calamities, and with a breast pierced and torn,
hastened to the Most Glorious Kingdom.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (From a Tablet; ‘Star of
the West’, vol. 4, no. 4, May 17, 1913)

I trust that you may make the land of Isfahan a salubrious
fountain, so that the cool water of knowledge and the flowing river of
assurance may make that region the envy of the green garden of Paradise. That
city was illumined with the presence of His Highness, the Bab, after He left
Shiraz; the Word of God was promulgated; many blessed souls became believers; a
number of them hastened toward the arena of martyrdom; his highness, the leader
of the righteous ones, the "King of the Martyrs," and the master of
the friends, the "Beloved of Martyrs," gave up their lives at the
altar of love. His Highness, Ashraf, and many other martyrs drank the cup of
trials and sacrificed their lives with the utmost severance. Therefore, it is
the hope of ‘Abdu’l-Baha that that region may become the Green Garden and that
city the delectable Paradise.

believers in Isfahan, Persia; Star of the West vol. 1, no. 14, November 23,

The teachings of Christ are forgotten. Consider that Christ
commanded Peter to sheathe his sword. He also said, `Whosoever shall smite thee
on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also' [Matt. 5:39]. But now, contrary
to these teachings, see how Christians are killing one another. Christian
leaders considered the shedding of the blood of each other a lawful act. What
blood has been shed over the conflict between Protestants and Catholics!

There are three kinds of Faith: first, that which is from
tradition and birth. For example: a child is born of Muhammadan parents, he is
a Muhammadan. [1] This faith is weak traditional faith: [2] second, that which
comes from Knowledge, and is the faith of understanding. This is good, but
there is a [3] better, the faith of practice. This is real faith.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Notes of conversations; ‘Abdu’l-Baha in London’)
July 5
Question: How can we get the power to follow the right path?
‘Abdu’l-Baha’s answer: By putting the teaching into practice
power will be given. You know which path to follow: you cannot be mistaken, for
there’s a great distinction between God and evil, between Light and darkness,
Truth and falsehood, Love and hatred, Generosity and meanness, Education and
ignorance, Faith in God and superstition, good Laws and unjust laws.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Notes of conversations; ‘Abdu’l-Baha in London’)
July 4
No affair in the world succeeds without sacrifice. Up to now
twenty thousand persons have been sacrificed for this Cause. The Bahá'ís have
accepted every affliction and persecution. For forty years I was in a prison
for promulgating universal peace and the oneness of humanity. Because these
teachings were contrary to the interests and the despotism of the Sháh of
Persia and the Sultán of Turkey, they arose in opposition and oppression. With
all their power they girded their loins to uproot and efface the Cause of God.
But the Cause of Bahá'u'lláh was victorious and the fame of His Revelation
spread worldwide. Every opponent was overthrown and humiliated because this
Cause was supported by the All-Powerful and because His teachings answer the
need of the age to promote human happiness and provide supreme guidance.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Words of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, December 1, New York, recorded by Mahmud
Zarqani; ‘Mahmud’s Diary’)

Bahá’u’lláh appeared at a time when Persia was plunged in
the darkest ignorance and consumed by the blindest fanaticism. You have no
doubt read at length the accounts that European histories provide of the
morals, manners, and thoughts of the Persians during the last few centuries,
and these require no repetition. Suffice it to say that Persia had sunk to such
abysmal depths that foreign travellers would all deplore that a country which
had in former times occupied the pinnacle of greatness and civilization had by
then fallen into such abasement, desolation, and ruin, and that its people had
been reduced to utter wretchedness.

The government, the nation, the clergy, and prominent
leaders sought to extinguish His light, but to no avail. At last His moon rose,
His star shone forth, His foundation was secured, and His horizon was flooded
with light. He trained a large multitude through divine education and exerted a
marvellous influence upon the thoughts, customs, morals, and manners of the
Persians. He proclaimed the glad-tidings of the manifestation of the Sun of
Bahá to all His followers and readied them for faith and certitude.

… in this cycle of Bahá'u'lláh verbal confessions and
acknowledgements, literal faith and certainty and external relations are of no
avail. Nay, rather, the beloved of God and the maid-servants of the Merciful
must manifest such attributes and ethical conduct as to embody and personify
the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh.
